🥚 ডিম পাউরুটি Dim Pauruti- The only French Toast we ever knew!
Before YouTube came and burst our bubble about French Toasts (the actual ones) we knew that Dim Pauruti is the Bengali bhadralok’s favorite French Toast.
Bread slices dunked in eggs beaten light with grated onion, garlic, slight touch of ginger, finely chopped green chilies and some seasoning, and then fried till golden brown. This is what made our Sunday’s breakfast the most awaited one after a hectic and tiring week at school.
It was only after we grew up and saw our dreams crushed when we saw videos where breads were dunked in eggs beaten with sugar, milk…unicorn and what not! YouTube, you totally played a spoilsport here!
However, our love for this humble street food from the lanes of Kolkata remained just as it was earlier. Popular as Egg Toast or ডিম টোস্ট রেসিপি, it would be essentially served as a spicy omelette with a halved mini-loaf of bread fried with it. Often it would be fried in Mustard Oil, which would give it a hint of pungency, just perfect to go with some bharer cha (tea served in terracotta cups).
Today, often Sunday breakfast gets replaced by late brunches which includes anything but this childhood favorite,
ডিম পাউরুটি aka Dim Pauruti. But our love for this hasn’t been replaced. Self-pampering comes in different forms, and making Dim Pauruti or this Bengali style Egg Toast for dinner is definitely something that suits us. Serve it with a side of Homemade Green Chili Sauce.
An ode to an egg-celent superfood!
It’s no longer news that I love Eggs, in any form whatsoever! And, I have quite a collection of egg recipes on my blog.

ডিম পাউরুটি aka Dim Pauruti is a Sunday breakfast must-have in almost every Bengali household. Bread slices dunked in beaten eggs mixed with spices and onion-ginger paste, and fried till golden and lip-smacking tasty.
- 8 Slices Brown Bread Or, Multigrain Bread
- 6 Eggs
- 1 Onion Large, Paste
- 1/2 inch Ginger paste
- Salt to Taste
- 2 Green Chilies Finely Chopped
- 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
- 2 Garlic Cloves Paste – Optional
- 2 tbsp Milk
- Sunflower Oil to fry
-
Beat the eggs with some salt till light. Now add onion, ginger, garlic, green chilies, red chili powder and milk. Beat everything together with a whisk.
-
Heat a drizzle of oil in a non-stick frying pan.
-
Dunk (dip) each slices of the bread in the egg mix till both sides are coated nicely and fry them in the oil. Keep the heat on medium-low.
Turn when the bread turn golden-brown. Fry the rest of the slices of bread in the similar way.
-
Serve hot with some Ketchup and Green Chili Sauce at the side.
Use Brown Bread/Multigrain Bread slices because these are most often thicker in size and do not get soggy and break off when dipped in the egg mix. White Bread slices or Sandwich Bread slices often becomes difficult in managing!
Moreover, Brown/Multigrain bread slices add some degree of good health into this recipe.
