There is a Bengali dish of Shorshe Bata diye Macher Jhal (Fish cooked in Mustard Seeds paste gravy). But I like to call this dish as ALOO DIYE MACHER JHAL in Bihari style.

Now, you must be wondering, why Bihari-style? Apart from potatoes, there is another ingredient which sets this dish apart, and that is GARLIC!

Bihar, another eastern Indian state, has its own cuisine. While everyone has heard of Litti Chokha or Thekua, but very few people have actually come across the everyday cooking from this region.

Hailing from this region has its own perks. While we get to enjoy our own traditional Bengali cuisine at our house, every once in a while we would be treated by the neighbors with their delicacies.

In most of the everyday cooking, garlic is very generously used. Its pungency is only seldom frowned upon, and there is no concept of over-use of garlic. The more, the merrier perhaps!

So, in this Shorshe bata & Aloo diye Rui Macher Jhal recipe, garlic slices are added to the oil in the beginning so that it releases its oils and becomes more aromatic.

How to make Aloo Diye Rui Macher Jhal – Ingredients list

  • Rui Maach – Rohu Fish – Carp
  • Potatoes
  • Mustard seeds
  • Mustard Oil
  • Garlic
  • Turmeric Powder
  • Salt

Substitutes for Rui Mach or Rohu Fish

Usually, Rohu can be found at any Indian grocery store or any South Asian grocery store. However, if you cannot find one or would like to know about rohu fish substitutes, you can try something from this list.

  • Bhetki Mach or Barramundi or Asian Sea Bass
  • Basa Fish or Swai or Bocourti
  • Mahi Mahi
  • Cod
  • Pollock
  • Tilapia
  • Halibut

In case, you wish to try this recipe and you do not have any kind of fish in your freezer, you can use Prawns instead. De-vein and clean them properly. You can leave the tail and head if you like. And use them int his recipe in place of rohu.

And, if you do not any prawns as well, you can still try this recipe with Eggs. Yes, you heard it right. Make the gravy as per this recipe and use hard-boiled eggs instead of fish. In fact, I already have that recipe on my blog in details. You can check it here, Dim Shorshe recipe.

Make-ahead or Freezing Option

You can make a big batch of it and store it in an air tight box in your refrigerator for a week. You can also freeze individual portions for 2 weeks.

You can make the Mustard Seeds paste ahead and refrigerate it. Before serving, simply fry the potatoes and cook the fish with the Mustard seeds paste.

Instructions
  1. Grind the Mustard Seeds, Turmeric Powder, and Salt together with some water into a fine paste. Note that there shouldn’t be any graininess of the seeds. It should be an absolute fine paste.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add the sliced potatoes. Fry them till they are cooked. It should take somewhere between 4-5 minutes.
  3. Now chop the garlic and add them to the potatoes.
  4. Make some space in the pan by pushing the potato slices toward the side. Place the fish pieces. Let them seer, for couple of minutes. We are not looking to fry them or char them dark. Just a light fry to one side.

Use a wide bottom pan accordingly.

  5. In 3-4 minutes, turn the fishes over. There should be a golden hue to the fried side.
