If you are in India or have ever been here then chances are that you have seen this super popular veggie burger on McDonald’s menu. Suited for Indian tastebuds, it offers a veg burger option to those who are looking for meat substitute options.
In this blogpost I will tell you how I make the exact copycat style of mcdonald’s aloo tikki burger at home easily. Simple ingredients that give you a delicious tikki burger in the matter of minutes.
How to make crispy Aloo Patty for Tikki Burger
The moment you take a big bite into a McAloo Tikki Burger it’s the crispy aloo veg patty inside that packs the punch. Slowly you get all the flavours together, aloo tikki patty with a slight crunch from peas and smokey flavour from cumin coming together with the signature cheesy sauce.
I have been making this veg aloo tikki burger for so many years and I think I have finally nailed the recipe for veg patty that’s is delicious yet healthy.
- Boil the potatoes till they are just cooked and then spread them out on a tea towel to cool them off. This way they will loose the extra moisture and won’t make the burger patty soggy.
- If you have noticed, these aloo patties always have a few peas in them which are slightly cooked. So, I steam them a bit to loose the crunch before mashing them into the potatoes.
- I keep the spices to the minimum as I do not want them to overplay the flavours. Basic seasonings such as salt & pepper along with a little bit of cumin powder add the right amount of smokey flavour
- Although potato is a great binding agent, these veggie patties need a little bit more to get them to hold their shape. Normally recipes call for breadcrumbs or even poha (beaten rice), but I prefer using crushed cornflakes or oats. Needless to say, these vegan patties turn up gluten-free and much healthier
- Instead of deep frying, I place them on a griddle or tawa and fry them with a knob of butter. The ingredients of aloo tikki are already cooked so all we need is to make the exterior crispy and brown.

McDonald style Aloo Tikki Burger recipe instructions
- We will start by prepping for the burger patties. Boil the potatoes till they are just done. Once they have cooled down completely, peel them and spread them on a plate or a kitchen towel to dry up a little bit.
- Meanwhile, steam the Peas. I like doing this in Microwave Oven. Simply add a tablespoon of water to the bowl of peas and cook it on high for 5 minutes. Drain the water and allow the peas to sit on the sieve for a couple of minutes.
- In a mixing bowl, add the boiled potatoes along with peas and mash them together.
- Add crushed cornflakes, grated ginger, finely chopped chilies, and fresh coriander leaves along with the spices. Mix everything well into a smooth dough.
- Here you can play around with flavors by adding spices of your choice such as coriander powder, chaat masala powder, and even finely chopped onion & garlic.
- Divide the dough into 4 equal parts and form them into patties.
- Heat a griddle pan or a skillet and drop a knob of butter. Place the burger patty in the pan and cook it on medium-low heat. We need them to get a good char making them crispy. Turn them over and allow the next side to cook as well.
- Once done, take them out and place them on a plate.
- On another skillet, drop a knob of butter and place the burger buns cut in halves. Once they turn golden, take them out.
- To assemble the burgers, place the bottom half of the burger bun. Slather some burger sauce. Start creating layers with lettuce, aloo tikki burger patty, tomato slices, and onion rings. Top with the other half of the bun and serve.
Serving suggestions for McAloo Tikki Burgers
The classic way of serving these veg aloo tikki burgers is with french fries and a tall glass of coke (well I prefer iced tea!). If I am planning for a healthy meal, then I go for a side of garden salad with a cup of green tea.
Meal Prep or Storing Ideas
Wanna know how to enjoy this best aloo tikki burger recipe? Make it twice. Or, make a double batch of the aloo tikki burger patty and freeze half of it for later. Place them in a freezer-friendly glass container with butter paper placed between them. This will prevent them from sticking to each other.
Put on the lid tightly and put this in the freezer. You can use these up in the next 7 to 10 days. When you are ready to use, take them out and thaw them before frying. Proceed with making the burgers as per your choice.
